SCCS is strengthening the careers of young conservation scientists around the world

through events in Cambridge, Australia, Bangalore, Beijing, New York and Hungary.


The Student Conference on Conservation Science series in Cambridge, Australia, Beijing, Bangalore, New York and Hungary is the only international series of conservation conferences aimed entirely at students. SCCS helps young conservation scientists gain experience, learn new ideas and make contacts that will be valuable for their future careers. Over the past 17 years, SCCS Cambridge has hosted over 2,800 delegates from 128 countries worldwide.


The 2017 Conference

The eighteenth conference in the Cambridge series will be held from 28 - 30 March 2017, in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, UK. NEW Deadline for applications: Friday 21 October 2016 at 10:00 AM GMT.

Who can attend?

The conference is designed for young conservation researchers from biological, environmental and geography departments of universities as well as conservation and resource management agencies. If you would like to come to our next conference, please fill in our application form.

SCCS New York: Missed the application deadline to present at SCCS-NY 2016? You can still register NOW to attend the Student Conference on Conservation Science - New York October 20-22, 2016. Register by July 15 for the $125 Early Bird rate; the registration fee increases to $150 after this date.

SCCS Bangalore:regular registration will remain open until August 30.

Talks and posters

Each day the programme starts with a plenary lecture from a leading conservation scientist, and is followed by around 10 student talks. About 100 students also present their work at the three poster sessions.

Workshops and networking

As well as attending presentations, conference delegates can take part in workshops, which cover skills such as paper-writing, fund-raising, social science tools, and much more. Other events include evening sessions where delegates can meet conservation professionals from leading UK and international conservation bodies.

Bursaries and Internships

If you are from a developing country or eastern European country, you can you use our online application form to apply for a BURSARY to help with the costs of getting to the conference or an INTERNSHIP if you want to both attend the conference and work on a conservation-related project for one month at a UK institution. Please view this table before applying to see whether you qualify. We will consider applicants only from Lower Income (LIC), Lower Middle Income (LMC) and Upper Middle Income (UMC) countries for bursaries and internships. Please note that we are only able to help a small number of applicants for bursaries and internships and cannot help those already based in western Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or North America.

The conference internship scheme enables students to extend their visit to the UK for up to four weeks after the conference to carry out mutually beneficial work with conservation organisations or academic institutions. The internship scheme aims to to help develop the careers of promising conservation scientists and to strengthen and catalyse north-south collaborations.


SCCS in Australia, India, China, Hungary and the USA

The SCCS family is growing.The sixth conferences in the sister series of the Student Conference on Conservation Science family were held in Bangalore (India) and New York (USA) in 2015. The next SCCS in Bangalore will be 21–24 September 2016 and the next New York conference on 20–22 October 2016. The second SCCS Australia was held in Brisbane in January 2015 and the third conference there will be held in 2017. The third conference in the SCCS-Beijing series was held in 2015, with the next planned for November 2016. The first of a new SCCS conference series was held in Hungary in September 2015 and the second will be held 30 August – 2 September 2016.
